ABOUT TALLAWALLA CATTLE

Run by Alexandra and Peter Tiffin, Tallawalla Cattle is a family business breeding Angus cattle for the lifestyle farmer.

The farm is set on 520 acres in Dungog, within the Lower Hunter region of NSW.

CALM ENVIRONMENT

Our farm provides our cattle with scenic surroundings, including intermittent creeks, tree groves, and lush pastures ideal for the birthing season (August/September). Throughout the rest of the year, the cattle are rotated through our gently sloping paddocks with abundant multi-species pastures.

They enjoy access to clean, troughed drinking water. There are twenty dams on the property; several are fenced to maintain dam health, while others are open for the cattle to wade in on warmer days.

A REGENERATIVE APPROACH TO FARMING

We are focused on growing grass and soil. We employ regenerative farming practices when practicable and work with Local Land Service and other land care groups to refresh and restore the landscape. We have planted over 1500 endemic trees and shrubs to complement our existing wooded areas.

After planting out several koala corridors with suitable native species throughout the property and adding wildlife boxes to trees, we have been rewarded with sightings of Koalas, Sugar Gliders and have a breeding pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles.

OUR PEOPLE

ALEXANDRA AND PETER TIFFIN | OWNERS

The Dungog region has for many years had a magnetic pull on our family. It took nearly 20 years from joyous farm stays to finally take the plunge and establish this property.

Alex took her first steps on the family Poll Hereford Stud – Villa Rossi, in the Pilliga Scrub of NSW. Her Bachelor of Science studies, focused on vegetation and terrestrial vertebrates, led to her first job working as a Jillaroo on a vast cattle station in the Northern Territory. Her experiences have provided a lifelong connection with the land and she now directs the care of the flora and fauna on the property.

Peter worked as a farmhand in outback QLD in his youth and has since applied those skills and the numerous business skills he has developed over the years to plan and implement the infrastructure and business strategy for the property. His experiences engendered a love of rural life and cattle breeding.

Alex and Peter understand the need for help and seek advice from local, experienced farmers, cattle experts, an agronomist, and the ‘Local Land Services’ team. They are grateful for their continuing guidance.

BRETT THOMSON | CONSULTANT

Brett, a graduate of Farrer Agricultural College, brings decades of experience in the Angus cattle industry. He served as stud manager for the renowned Forres Angus Stud in Queensland, working initially with David and Jill Raff of Raff Angus, and then for over 34 years with Jon and Chris Erby at their Dungog facility.

Brett’s expertise in Angus cattle is second to none. He plays a vital role in consulting on animal selection to ensure our herd remains docile and highly productive. His extensive local knowledge has also been invaluable in advising on animal husbandry practices.

For smaller cattle orders (five head or fewer), Brett conducts an independent review to assess health and temperament, approving each animal before it is released into your care.
